This week we have been reading Dr. Seuss books in order to analyze the theme of the text. Through our core novel, The Well of Sacrifice, we have been analyzing theme, collecting text evidence, and discovering the message the author wants us to apply to our own lives. Phew, we've been busy!
With Read Across America Day having just past is seemed like a great time to apply our Theme skills to some of the most famous books by Dr. Seuss. I've shared my favorite Dr. Seuss book Oh, The Places You'll Go. I fell like it has such a great message that applies to everyone's lives and the message can be a little different depending on what stage of life your are in.
It got me wondering-What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book and why?

I have to say that my favorite Dr. Seuss book would have to be The Sneetches. I love The Sneetches so much because it has the message of it doesn't matter that someone is different than you but what does matter is what kind of person they are. you can really apply this to your own life because if someone looks different to you, you don't want to make fun of them for it because it could really hurt their feelings. It also has the message of being yourself. If someone acts different from you, you don't want to change your whole personality just because that's how they act. If you have ever heard the quote if your friend jumps off a bridge would you? ( because I certainly have) you know that you don't have to do everything everyone else does all you have to do is be your own unique person.
ReplyDeleteI do like The Sneetches for many of the reasons you mentioned above. I also enjoy reading that aloud because of the line "The Sneeteches who had stars upon thars". It's just a funny sentence.

Well. this is very hard for me because i honestly don't have a favorite but i will pick one. The one that I pick is Horton hears a who. That's the book I pick because I feel there is a great message to this topic of book. When Horton hears the who come out of the mini, mini, mini town, he thinks he hears a noise. When he starts to spread the news that the thinks people are inside that plant, everyone just laughs and says that he's a very dumb person because he thinks people live in that plant. Well Horton does not let those cruel people stop him. He was very bold, brave, and persistent because he did not give up on finding out if there were actually people living in there. And when he did find out, there were people living in that plant he once again showed his friends there, were and this time he was successful and did not make a fool out of himself! BTW i do not know if its a plant. Thats my favorite book!

I love that book too Caitlin! I was going to do my comment on that book but then I thought about The Sneetches. I also think that Horton Hears a Who has a great message to it like a persons a person no matter how small. I love every time that Horton says that quote and can just read it over and over again.
ReplyDeleteOh man I have never been a big Dr. Seuss fan but I have a soft spot for Green eggs and Ham. I like this book because when I was little I didn't like to try new foods but now once I have tried something I some times don't like them but some times I end up having that food as my favorite food. I think it encourages kids to try new foods that might not look good but they might taste good. I had to pick this one because it doesn't tell a story like How The Grinch Stole Christmas or Horton Hears a Who does because its really just rhyming and sam I am to get the main character to try green eggs and ham. Over all this is one of the Dr.Seuss books I think of fondly.
ReplyDelete-Thanks Zach
Interesting choice and lesson derived from he text Zach!
