This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. A week set aside to thank those teachers who play an important role in our lives, and in some cases, the lives of our children. Just a quick twitter search will show you endless hashtags that fill my teacher heart with joy. (Seriously, check out #teacherappreciationweek and #ThankATeacher to see people expressing their love for the teachers in their lives.)
Not one to be left out I thought I'd join in on the #teacherlove.
First, there was Mrs. Zell. Mrs. Zell was my fourth grade teacher and the teacher I credit with planting the seed of reading in 4th grade me, nurturing it, and helping it grow. If it wasn't for Mrs. Zell I might not have fallen in love with books and the adventure they take you on. Mrs. Zell allowed us to turn chapters of our books into plays and perform them in front of the class. She encouraged us to think like the characters in the story and become them when we performed. She opened her classroom before and after school to give us time, space, and materials to create our grand productions. I knew, without a doubt, that Mrs. Zell cared for me. Not just as a student but she cared for me as a person and I felt cared for. One vivid memory I have of Mrs. Zell was when we read a play version of The Diary of Anne Frank. Theatrical is one word that I would use to describe her teaching style-blinds would be closed, lights turned out, and twenty-four 9 year olds climb on their desks with books in their laps. As we read Mrs. Zell stopped anytime someone made the slightest noise trying to give us the simplest understanding of what it would be like to live silently in an attic afraid of being heard. The experience really connected with me and I was sucked into reading. I was sucked into reading for life and I thank Mrs. Zell for making me an avid reader and for inspiring me to strive each and every day to turn my students into life long lovers of reading.
The next teacher that made a huge impact on me was a high school Spanish teacher. She wasn't MY high school Spanish teacher but the advisor of a club I belonged to and would later become president. Mrs. Koren was the teacher I never had but the teacher who had a great impact on the high school version of me. Her focus was on helping those around us. We volunteered at homeless shelters around Christmas to bring presents to those in need. We organized food drives and clothing donations. We visited old folks homes just so they had someone to talk to. Although Mrs. Koren never taught me Spanish, she taught me to be a better person, how to be a leader, and how important it was (and still is) that we take care of each other.
Both these teachers effected me in different ways and, as one does with people who are important to them, I kept touch with both of these teachers far after the calendar page turned to June and I was forced to move on. I hope that I told these teachers how important they were to me while I was a student in their company (I doubt it). I hope I have showed them, after leaving their classrooms, the impact they have had on me (maybe). I hope that they are aware of the role they played in my life, the impact they have had on me as a student, and adult, and now a teacher and I hope I remember that effect indefinitely (certainly).
So, over the next 4 days I encourage you to take a moment. Reflect over your education and take a short moment to reach out to a teacher who inspired you. A quick note or a quick hug-both will warm their teacher heart. #ThankATeacher

Mr. Font
ReplyDeleteA teacher that has really impacted my life is actually you! You have taught me so much over the year and have always lifted me up when I have fallen. I can not even explain the things you have taught me from school lessons to real life experiences and I am so grateful. You have gave me advise about how to get through all of the things life are going to throw at me and have also thrown a couple of things at me to improve myself as a person. I love how we connect not just as teacher and student but as friend and friend. I love how you have so much fun not just teaching your lessons but watching us analyze, learn and grow into astounding young learners. Your outgoing personality always makes me smile and makes your lessons that much better, you have made reading one of my favorite subjects and made me an outstanding writer and for that I am so grateful. I am going to be crushed when we leave in June but all of our memories will always stay fresh in my mind and your outgoing personality and great lessons that always make me LOL will never be forgotten.

Mr.Font,
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Jada, you have done more for us then any other teacher would! You have taught me and MANY other a large amount over these 2 years with each other. It may look like I am the one who doesn't seem much to care about you, and it also may seem like I don't put myself out there during class, but trust my I do. I try to put my sled out there but never works. Who wouldn't care about you in our class anyways! There is many apperception to give to you. 908% and even more is the apperception I am giving! There is many life lessons you have taught, most of the good and some of the bad! I'm glad to say you are not only my teacher, but my friend and you have a special place in my heart! You have done from just starting how to read like a reader, until moving up to the highest ELA group! You have created a monster of school work on the outside, but in the inside you have made me a successful human being to get ready for next year. The time and effort must pay off when you see us, growing each day by the second! You made us extraordinary young learners! Peopel ms think your personality is mad but if I could, I will right argumentative essay on why I your personality is AMAZING! I just love how your not afraid to share what you do. You loud voice definitely gets us into shape when we're not paying attention, and even when you are mad you still have the warm sweet look your face with the corner smile. Mr.Font, can I just say before 4th-5th grade I absolutely HATED reading and writing, but then you came into my life. You changed that hatred into ADDICTIVE, and LOVING! Now I can't stop reading and witting ( did you know I'm making a book probably not to publish) I don't want this school year to end even though going to middle school is exciting, and we are starting a new chapter in our life's, but I rather stay in the same chapter and not flip all the way to the other! Mr.Font I appreciate you more than anything and when we leave in June, like Jada said I WILL be super crushed and I will have tears Rowling down my eyes, I will look like a zombie but it's okay because it will be worth the time spending with our class and you! Hope you appreciated outgoing Mr.Font, and have a wonderful day!

Dear Mr. Font,
ReplyDeleteIf any one has been a huge impact on me its 100% you. You have taught me more than to the moon and back and I intend on using every SINGLE thing you have taught me in life later and now. I loved reading when I came into your room but you helped my understand it even MORE!!! With using( some times annoying, but useful) post its you showed us that a book is not just a book but a place were you have questions and predictions on what will happen in the future of the book and that helps me a lot. When this school years ends, (honestly) I don't know how Im going to survive because you have impacted my life for nearly 2 whole years and when it ends, well I'm not sure how I will handle it because Village has been my home since kindergarten and now that I have to let it go, I'm not sure how ill handle it but it will be rough for me. I know that in middle school when I have to be responding essays I will do them EXACTLY how Mr. Font taught me them and I will think of him every time I write a essay or a response or whatever. Mr. Font you don't know how much I appreciate coming in to a teacher who really cares about my future and how I do in the rest of life instead of having a teacher who teaches my without any care.
Mr. Font thank you for being a great impact in my life,
Zach
Everyone would probably know my favorite teacher ......... Mrs. Colucci no I'm just playing around its Mr.Font even though Mrs.Colucci is a great teacher. The reason why I enjoy Mr. Font so much is because he takes his time to plan celebrations for us like the Christmas celebration, The Easter celebration, and the Halloween celebration (remember the disgusting stew) good times! Mr. Font always gives us extra recess and does fun things with us even when don't expect it!! We might have some bad times like when it's nerve-racking when you call me to the hall or even if you have to talk to us as a whole. That's okay sometimes we make mistakes and we have to pay the consequences! I love how you give life lessons to us either things you shouldn't do or things you should do in your life and that is one reason why Mr. Font inspires me so much! You always make sure we feel accomplished by throwing us writing celebrations and and that's more than kind. Remember in our previous narrative celebration Mr. Font and us thought because of our other celebrations of narratives this narrative celebration was going to be the same difficulty as the other ones, Mr. Font saw that we actually grew even more as a writer and and Mr. Font had tears of joy and that always makes you feel happy inside too! You give some unexpected fun things like for social studies first we had a Hershey day and then a Disney day in that's always fun! I would love to say more on how you're such a great teacher but this would take up lots of space in this post so unfortunately I have to stop here. Just saying what are you going to do more raffling of the chocolate frogs ?? I know I told you how good of a teacher you are but I really need to get hands on those babies!!
ReplyDelete#TEAMFONT!

Your words mean more than you will ever be able to comprehend (even with annoying post-its Zach).
ReplyDeleteSo friends, find some time this week to tell the teachers in your life- past or present, classroom or specials, dance or baseball coach that you appreciate them.
It truly means a great deal!
-Mr. Font
That would be a great pleasure, to do so. I will even right it on a task note to explain how much I appreciate this one special teacher in my life.!
